    Paper Tearing Tester

The Paper Tearing Tester is a precision instrument specifically designed for measuring the tearing strength of paper and paperboard, fully complying with ISO 1974 (Paper — Determination of tearing resistance — Elmendorf method) and GB 455.1 standards. It is primarily used for tear testing of paper and is particularly suitable for lower-strength paperboard. The instrument features a mechatronic design with a computer-controlled measurement system based on a high-precision photoelectric shaft encoder and single-chip digital circuit technology. It offers simple human-machine interaction via an LC...

Product Introduction
The paper tearing tester operates on the Elmendorf method principle, measuring the force required to tear a paper or board specimen to evaluate its tearing resistance. A standard-sized specimen with a pre-cut initial slit is clamped between pendulum-type fixtures. When the pendulum is released, it tears the specimen from the initial slit during its swing. The instrument uses a high-precision photoelectric shaft encoder to measure the energy consumed during the tearing process and converts it to a tearing force value displayed on the LCD screen. The computer control system automates testing, data processing, and result display, with a user-friendly interface for simple operation.

FAQ
1. What types of paper and board are suitable for tear testing?
It is suitable for various types of paper and lower-strength paperboard. For thick boards with high tearing resistance, the extended measuring range up to 16000 mN can be selected. Please consult us to confirm applicability.

2. What specimen preparation is required before testing?
Specimens should be cut to specified dimensions and conditioned under standard temperature and humidity. A standard initial cut must be made on each specimen. Refer to ISO 1974 or GB 455.1 for detailed size requirements and preparation methods.

3. How can I ensure measurement accuracy?
The instrument is factory-calibrated. Routine verification can be performed using the included standard calibration weights. Ensure specimens are clamped flat, initial cuts are correctly made, and the testing environment meets standard requirements.

4. Can the instrument measure both machine direction and cross direction tear?
Yes. Paper tear is typically tested in both machine direction (MD) and cross direction (CD). The testing method is identical; only the specimen cutting direction differs. Comparing MD and CD tear strength helps assess paper anisotropy.

5. What if the LCD display appears abnormal or unclear?
First, check the power connection. If the display remains abnormal, it may be due to a loose cable or backlight issue. Contact our after-sales team for inspection; do not disassemble the display module yourself.

6. Does the pendulum mechanism require regular lubrication?
The pendulum bearings are lubricated at the factory and generally do not need frequent re-oiling. Keep the equipment clean and periodically wipe the body with a soft cloth to prevent dust from entering bearing components. If pendulum movement becomes stiff, contact after-sales service.

Tearing resistance is a critical mechanical property of paper and paperboard, reflecting the material's ability to resist tearing forces. Paper is frequently subjected to tearing during printing, packaging, converting, and end-use—such as web feeding in printing presses, bag sealing, and package opening. Insufficient tear strength can lead to easy tearing and product failure. The Elmendorf method is the internationally recognized standard for tear testing, measuring the energy consumed by a pendulum in tearing a pre-cut specimen to characterize the material's tear resistance. ISO 1974 and GB 455.1 standards define uniform specifications for test principles, specimen dimensions, initial cut length, and testing conditions to ensure inter-laboratory data comparability. Modern digital tearing testers employ photoelectric encoding and microcomputer control technologies, automating the testing process and significantly improving efficiency and accuracy. These instruments are widely used in quality control at paper mills, performance evaluation of packaging materials, material research at scientific institutes, and product inspection at quality agencies.
