Product Introduction
The super calender employs a two-roll calendering principle, forming a nip between the top metal heated roll and the bottom rubber soft roll. As paper passes through the nip, the combined high temperature and pressure compress and flatten the surface fibers, filling surface voids and producing a high-smoothness, high-gloss finish. The hydraulic power unit provides precisely adjustable linear pressure, while the electric heating system ensures uniform and constant metal roll surface temperature. The unwind uses an air shaft with magnetic powder clutch tension control for stable web feeding. The PLC touchscreen control system allows pre-setting of calendering speed, temperature, and pressure for automated one-touch operation. Changing to embossing rolls also supports surface texturing, meeting diverse laboratory research needs.

FAQ
1. What is the difference between a super calender and a regular sheet press?
The super calender is specifically designed for paper surface finishing. Using a combination of a metal heated roll and a rubber soft roll under high temperature and pressure, it primarily improves surface properties such as smoothness, gloss, and density. A sheet press is used for dewatering and consolidating wet webs during the sheet forming process. The two serve completely different functions and are positioned at different stages of the papermaking workflow.

2. How do I set and adjust the linear pressure? What pressure is recommended for different paper types?
Linear pressure is set via the PLC touchscreen, and the hydraulic power unit automatically adjusts and maintains the constant pressure. The appropriate pressure depends on the paper grade, grammage, and desired calendering effect. Lightweight papers typically require lower pressure, while heavier boards or high-gloss grades require higher settings. It is recommended to start from a lower pressure and gradually increase until the target surface finish is achieved.

3. What is the significance of the rubber roll hardness of 89? Can other hardness values be supplied?
Hardness 89 is a standard value selected to balance calendering uniformity and roll surface elasticity, suitable for most paper calendering applications. The elastic rubber roll compensates for microscopic surface irregularities in the paper, producing a more uniform calendering effect. Rubber rolls with other hardness specifications can be customized; please contact us for details.

4. Can the unit perform embossing? What additional configuration is needed?
Yes. The standard configuration is for calendering. To perform embossing, simply replace the standard rolls with dedicated embossing rolls. Custom embossing patterns can be manufactured to meet various surface texturing requirements.

5. How should the rolls be cleaned and maintained?
After each use, allow the roll surfaces to cool, then wipe the metal roll with a soft cloth to remove residual paper dust and debris. The rubber roll should avoid contact with organic solvents; clean it gently with water or a neutral detergent. Periodically inspect roll surfaces for wear. If significant wear or damage is observed, contact us for grinding repair or roll replacement.

6. What types of paper and materials can be processed?
The calender is suitable for a wide range of paper-based materials, including cultural papers, packaging papers, specialty papers, paperboard, as well as some plastic films and composite materials for laboratory calendering. Specific suitability depends on the material's heat resistance and physical properties; small-scale trials are recommended before full processing.

Calendering is a critical surface finishing step in the papermaking process, positioned after the drying section and before reeling or sheeting. The principle involves passing the paper web through one or more nips formed between a metal heated roll and an elastic soft roll. Under the combined effect of high temperature and pressure, surface fibers are compressed and aligned, and microscopic surface voids are filled and sealed, significantly improving paper smoothness, gloss, density, and printability. A laboratory calender is a scaled-down version that simulates industrial calender operations, performing the essential tasks of optimizing calendering process parameters (pressure, temperature, speed) for new paper grade development, conducting comparative studies of surface properties across different grades, and preparing specimens with specialized finishes such as high gloss, matte, or embossed textures. Modern laboratory calenders integrate hydraulic pressing, electric temperature control, and PLC automation to achieve precise setting and stable replication of calendering conditions, providing a standardized platform for paper surface property research in paper mills, research institutes, and universities. It is an indispensable piece of equipment in the pulp and paper laboratory.
