Product Introduction
The Paper and Board Thickness Tester operates on the contact measurement principle: under a specified measuring pressure and area, the distance between the two parallel measuring surfaces—the anvil and the pressure foot—is measured by a precision dial indicator, representing the single-sheet thickness of the paper or board. The purely mechanical structure without complex electronics ensures excellent long-term stability. By switching between the two standard pressures (100 kPa/50 kPa), it accommodates different standard requirements from regular paper to soft tissue. The reading is taken directly from the high-precision dial indicator, eliminating errors from electronic drift. It is the classic standard instrument for thickness and apparent density determination in paper laboratories.

FAQ
1. What types of materials can be measured with this thickness tester?
It is primarily designed for thickness measurement of flat sheet specimens, including ordinary paper, paperboard, single-wall corrugated board plies, and soft tissue. It is not suitable for rough or highly textured surfaces.
2. How to choose between the 100 kPa and 50 kPa pressures?
100 kPa is the standard measuring pressure for most paper and paperboard according to ISO 534 and GB/T 451.3. 50 kPa is used for soft tissue paper as specified in GB/T 1938. Select the pressure based on the material type and the standard you are following.
3. How to calibrate and verify accuracy?
The instrument is factory-calibrated. Daily verification can be performed using standard thickness gauge blocks. Compare the dial indicator reading with the gauge block's nominal value. If deviation is found, adjust the dial indicator's zero point or contact our after-sales service for professional recalibration.

4. What anvil size corresponds to the 200 mm² measuring area?
200 mm² is the standard measuring area specified in the standards, corresponding to a circular anvil diameter of approximately 16 mm. This size is widely used in ISO and GB standards and is suitable for most paper and board specimens.
5. Does the mechanical structure require lubrication maintenance?
The mechanical lifting mechanism is lubricated at the factory and generally does not need frequent re-oiling. If lifting movement becomes stiff after prolonged use, apply a small amount of light lubricating oil to the guide rod. Keeping the measuring surfaces clean is the main daily maintenance task.
6. Can it measure the total thickness of corrugated board?
It can measure the thickness of individual plies of corrugated board but is not suitable for directly measuring the total caliper (including flute height) of combined board, because the small measuring area cannot cover an entire flute pitch. For total corrugated board thickness, a specialized thickness gauge with a larger anvil is recommended.

Thickness is one of the most fundamental physical properties of paper and paperboard, directly influencing downstream processing, printing quality, and final packaging performance. Accurate thickness measurement is essential for product quality control, calculating apparent density, evaluating sheet uniformity, and predicting mechanical and optical properties. Standards such as ISO 534 and GB/T 451.3 define uniform testing conditions—including measuring pressure (100 kPa), measuring area (200 mm²), and rate of descent—to ensure inter-laboratory data comparability. Contact-type thickness testers used in laboratories avoid differences in paper compression during measurement by precisely controlling the measuring pressure, accurately reflecting the material's thickness under standard conditions. While digital and automatic recording functions have become more common with technological advances, the classic mechanical dial-indicator thickness tester remains an indispensable basic instrument in many laboratories due to its high stability, low maintenance, and cost-effectiveness. In paper mills, packaging and printing plants, and third-party testing institutions, the thickness tester is a standard piece of equipment in every quality control laboratory.
